What is the significance of a red dot at the upper right hand corner of my phone app? (N.B. Not the iPhone screen but the app itself)

I suspect a Voicemail in the Phone app. Usually you will see a badge number there, but connections issues and even after some updates may see just the red dot.
There are a couple of things I would try:
- Go to the Phone app and choose the Voicemail tab and listen/delete any Voicemails.
- Go to Settings and choose the Phone app, and change your Voicemail password. That should force the connection to your cellular provider to reestablish that connection. If you have not set up Visual Voicemail, then now is the time to do it.

- Force Restart your phone. The last step may take up to 20 seconds before you see the Apple logo and you must ignore anything else on the screen. If you do not see it then try again as it may take a couple of attempts to get the speed and sequence correct.
