Selection rectangle appears on mouse click

Hello everyone,

For some unknown reason, I keep getting this selection rectangle appearing every time I click, or when I release my mouse.

Here is my version: 26.1 (25B78)

Do you also have this problem? Or is it simply a setting that got enabled without me noticing?

Thank you in advance.

The purple outline rectangles that appear around UI elements (buttons, search fields, menus) are not a mouse selection bug.

They are macOS focus rings, and they appear when:

  • Full Keyboard Access is enabled, or
  • Keyboard navigation has been toggled on accidentally.

You can toggle this on without noticing by pressing:

Control + Option + Command + F5

or

Control + F7 (older shortcut)

Both toggle Full Keyboard Access on/off.

When it's on, macOS draws a highlighted rectangle around the currently selectable UI element — exactly like the one in your screenshot.

Using Settings

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Accessibility
  3. Click Keyboard
  4. Enter Keyboard Navigation or Full Keyboard Access
  5. Turn Full Keyboard Access → Off
