Safari UI elements require double-click on macOS

This issue has been going on for YEARS now and I am wondering when Apple will get around to fixing it. According to Reddit, I am NOT the only one having this issue and it is fairly common.

Safari is my primary browser for several reasons (one of them is privacy, another is integration with Apple services and a third is its efficient use of my Macbook's battery). That said, periodically, Safari starts requiring UI elements (on web pages and Safari controls such as tabs) to require a double-click to activate when they would normally require a single click.

The problem is NOT the web page itself because even clicking on tabs in the tab bar exhibits this issue.

The workaround is to close and reopen the Macbook's physical lid. Doing so resets the display in some way that Safari starts working with single clicks on buttons, links and tabs again.

Another work-around is to quit and reopen Safari and I believe there is another. But WHY has Apple not fixed this? I would think Apple employees are using Safari instead of Chrome, and they must be expreriencing this issue just like the rest of us.
