Microsoft Edge crashes on iPad 11th gen (iPadOS 26.1) when USB barcode scanner is connected via Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
Title: Microsoft Edge crashes on iPad 11th Gen (iPadOS 26.1) when USB barcode scanner is connected via Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter
Product: iPad (11th Generation, USB-C)
OS Version: iPadOS 26.1
Adapter: Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter (A2119)
Browser: Microsoft Edge (latest version from App Store)
Peripheral: USB Barcode Scanner (Datalogic Heron HD3100 and Honeywell Voyager 1400g)
Environment: Device is managed via Microsoft Intune with SCEP-based Wi-Fi authentication. Only Edge is used (required by our MES system). iPads are mounted in locked enclosures and powered continuously.
Issue Description:
When a USB barcode scanner is connected via the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, Microsoft Edge crashes immediately upon loading a specific internal web application (TopMES). The crash occurs consistently and reproducibly only under the following conditions:
- iPad 11th Gen running iPadOS 26.1
- Scanner connected via USB-A port on the Apple adapter
- Microsoft Edge is used to open the TopMES web application
- No HDMI cable is connected; only power and scanner are attached
The error message in Edge is:
“Sorry... something went wrong.”
What we’ve tested:
- The same setup works flawlessly on:
- iPad 10th Gen (Lightning) with iPadOS 26
- iPads running iPadOS 18.7
- Other USB barcode scanners were tested → same crash
- Without scanner connected → no crash
- Safari is not an option (TopMES requires Edge)
- No crash logs are available in the UI
- No custom keyboard shortcuts or accessibility settings were configured manually
Suspected Cause:
We suspect a regression or compatibility issue in iPadOS 26.1 related to USB HID devices (keyboard-class input) or the Apple USB-C adapter. Possibly related to the new “Full Keyboard Access” feature or changes in the USB stack. The issue may also be triggered by Edge’s handling of input focus or JavaScript events when a scanner is connected.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Connect Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter to iPad 11th Gen (iPadOS 26.1)
- Plug in USB barcode scanner (e.g., Datalogic Heron HD3100)
- Open Microsoft Edge
- Navigate to internal MES web app (TopMES)
- Observe crash
Expected Behavior:
Edge should load the web application normally and accept input from the scanner without crashing.
Actual Behavior:
Edge crashes immediately when the page loads and the scanner is connected.
Request:
Please investigate potential compatibility issues between iPadOS 26.1, USB HID devices (scanners), and the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter. If this is a known issue, please provide a workaround or timeline for a fix. If not, we are happy to provide further logs or testing support.
