Retrieving deleted email = help

HI. I deleted some emails 3 weeks ago but I should not have done. They are gone from my emails completely. Google says I can retrieve them up to 30 days but I get as far as signing in the time machine and get lost then, Any help really appreciated. Thank you

Email servers can use iMap or POP protocols. If you use imap the emails are stored on the server.

I use Gmail, but I use it by directly signing into Gmail thorugh my web browser. I do not use the Mail app on my computer. If I click on the disclosure triangle in the left column it expands to show a Trash folder. What's where my deleted emails get stored for 30 days.

So a lot of this depends upon the protocols your server is set to use and also which apps on which platform you use. Have you tried looking in a Trash folder?

What Google says has nothing to do with Time Machine. I don't use the Mail app, and don't currently use Time Machine, but Time Machine may only be able to restore your entire email folder to what it was at that time, not individual messages.

iCloud also has nothing to do with Gmail. Google is making statements purely with reference to its own role in this service.

Have you looked in your Mail application Trash folder? Did you set one up. Read this support article for more about that View deleted emails in Mail on Mac - Apple Support Choose your macOS version at the top.

If you are using imap and you do not see a Trash folder, you have to sign into your email provider's web mail service to undelete the email.

You may be able to change the behavior and now have deleted messages stored on your computer. You are using quite an old macOS and I don't know if you have the same settings. On my Sequoia Mac if you go to Settings (preferences) > Accounts > Mailbox behavior > uncheck "Keep deleted mail on server"

it will now start keeping deleted mail on your computer itself and a Trash folder will appear in your sidebar. This will not, of course, help you with the already deleted mail. For that you will have to sign into your email provider's web based application.

Sorry, but I do not have a Mac running your version so I cannot check what you need to do exactly. However, for deleted mail you will have to forget about the Mail app entirely and sign into Gmail directly and use their web-based email reader. I suspect they too will only keep the deleted emails for a limited period of time. Signing into Gmail is no more complicated that signing into pretty much any other web site. https://mail.google.com
