any recommendations for a replacement photo viewer instead of the horrible “preview” apple updated to? It is cumbersome, and forces you to close completely close the current photo. You used to be able to use the arrow key to open the next one easily.

I wonder if you're confusing Preview - which was always like that - with Quicklook, which works as you describe. Elect an image ina. folder. Tap the space bar to view it. Use the arrow keys to move around the folder.
If you are using the Files app, long-press an image, choose Open With and tap "Preview with Quick Look" (to check it.) This way you'll retrieve the previous behavior of Files where you can swipe to move to the next image.
