Blank screen in most startup modes, but all hardware appears ok. How to reset the software?
Hi, I have a tricky situation I don't really know how to get out of. I have an iMac 27" (2011, i5 3.1, 4 Gb RAM, High Sierra). Some weeks ago when I got it out of storage, I ended up on an internet site I was not confident about and shut it down. It then had some problems starting up again and appeared slower than normal. So I left it in order to scan it for any virus at a later stage.
I now started it up again and everything appeared to be ok. I then worked with several documents on the screen in the same time and halfway through my report it began to flicker. And then the screen went white.
So I went through the standard procedures:
> Removed all connected item (e.g. USB stick) and only left the keyboard and wireless mac trackpad
> Tried normal startup: Apple appears, timer turns, then white screen
> Tried safe mode (shift): Apple appears, time bar runs to 1/3rd, then white screen
> Tried recovery mode (cmd-R): depending on its mood: ends up with a blue striped screen
or a black screen
> Tried reset NVRAM / PRAM (op-cmd-R-P): No change
> Tried reset the SC... by puling the electric plug, waiting and restart: No change
> Tried diagnostic (opt-D): It connected to internet and did its short and then its
extensive hardware test. Result: everything is fine
> Tried Protocol startup (cmd-v): runs nicely the protocol. But as I have no idea what to look
for I don't know if anything is missing.
> Tried startup in hard disc mode (T): The screen displays the connection sign, but I
can't find the iMac's hard disc when connected to either of my macbook pro (intel mid 2015 and M1 2020).
> Sound is ok, screen appears to be ok as it shows various signs and colours (apple, display of protocol, hard disc connection symbol etc), wifi works, internet connection works, bluetooth (wireless trackpad) works, wireless mouse works.
So overall I am tempted to think that there is nothing wrong with the hardware. But I
don't know how to get onto the software. I am also wondering if I might have a
virus (with the recent short-notice shut-down of all early ESET software, there
is no ESET antivirus for this iOS anymore). I tried to use my other laptop with its
up-to-date Antivirus to scan my iMac. But as it doesn't connect in hard disc
mode ... Or could it be a RAM issue (it only has 4 Gb)?
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help!
