Sharing Calendar with Family

Why won't it let me add certain contacts to a new calender? They're greyed out and I cannot select them. I'm trying to add family members to a new calendar.

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Confirm that those contacts are on your Family Share settings: Settings > your name > Family Sharing.
