Will an iMessage without wifi or data turn into a txt message?

if someone with an iphone sends me an imessage but i don’t have mobile data turned on or am not connected to wifi, will the message default to a text message? i often don’t have my mobile data turned on when i’m out and don’t want to miss messages from people if they send it via imessage

No... cellular data are needed for SMS/MMS or iMessages

SMS/MMS use cellular data only

iMessages can use Wifi connection or cellular data.

See this support guide: About iMessage and SMS/MMS - Apple Support

I think Yes.

Best if you ask a friend eith iphone to send you a message while you have Wifi and cell data off and try it.

(NOT airplane mode though!)

Your Messages settings does need your phone number in the send and receive section.

I believe imessages will be received as SMS even if mobile data and wifi is off. You still need a bar of voice connection of course. SMS is an extension of the voice and pre-dates internet.

I can send an iMessage to my wifes Windoze phone with her wifi and cellular data off. She still gets it as SMS. Even if I turn off my Send as SMS and turn off my wifi and cell data she still receives it and can reply to me

I would be very disappointed if the only phone I could not communicate with was another iphone.
