Copying part of (a section) the screen to CLIPBOARD ? NOT to desktop.
How do you do this so then I can paste this section to Word, etc ? I'm using MacOS Mojave

Command-Shift-4 is the default mechanism for taking a screenshot.
By default you get a crosshair to drag out the area to grab. Pressing space switches to Window mode to grab an entire window.
Also, by default, images are saved to the desktop. To change to saving to the clipboard, add the Ctrl key (e.g. Control-Shift-Command-4) - the same toggle for area/window applies, and the grab is now in your clipboard to be pasted wherever you like.

You can use preview (file->take screenshot) to copy a portion of the screen and then use edit-> select all, edit->copy
