Random old texts at 2 am

It's not a virus. It's most likely not hackers. It's most probably a small glitch in a very complex system.

I received a irate text and a call from an unknown number saying I texted them at 2:21 am last night and provided a screenshot of it. I did not send any message I think it was maybe an Apple server issue or something. I have an iPhone 7plus using ios 13.1.3

Who is your carrier and who is the carrier the supposed sender is using?

There have been several reports of this today. So far, the only cellular carrier I've seen mentioned is Verizon. It could very well be a glitch in Verizon's system. I don't believe there is any possibility the phone is at fault.

I heard there was a glitch in the global SMS system. There have been reports of users experiencing this and have multiple carriers and devices. They all seem to have been originally sent on February 14th of this year.

Apple won't be posting anything about it in these forums because 1) they don't do that (their participation here is minimal) and 2) it's not an Apple problem.

I spoke with a representative from Apple who advised me to reset my network settings. They made it seem like a network issue but as I have been following twitter and this thread it appears to be across all networks. This feels like an Apple server issue of some sort but let’s hope it stops cause random text messages can be very dangerous to the wrong contacts.

It's not an Apple server problem. Apple's servers have nothing to do with SMS messages. And, they don't appear to be random messages. They appear to be messages from 2/14/2019 that were either never delivered or are being delivered again. So, they were messages intended for you.

I have an XR and I rec'd a random text from an Android user and my phone sent to a different person a text who also happens to be on Android. Something is weird here.

Glad it was reassuring.
