How do I select what I want to back up? There’s a bug somewhere in my phone which I suspected to be inside the settings so, are there options that I could just back up my photos and whatsapp only but not the settings, configurations, etc? Because I couldn’t see the option for it.

There is no way to control what is backed up to iCloud directly. However, you can sync content to iCloud (which is completely different from iCloud backup). Anything that you sync will not be included in an iCloud backup. To see your sync options go to Settings/{your name}/iCloud and turn on the switches for things you want to sync.
If you have other Apple devices or a Windows PC with the iCloud for Windows app you can set similar settings and all of your iCloud-synced data will appear on those devices.

Uh, my iPhone, which I almost never turn on, is in another room but I am pretty sure you can disable backup for various app data. I remember wondering if I put 10 GB of media files in VLC if this was going to mean I would have to upgrade my iCloud storage. I then had a look at Settings and saw I could turn off back up VLC data.
You are correct. Go to Settings/{your name}/iCloud/manage Storage/Backups/This Phone. You can exclude app data from the backup on an app by app basis. I think you will find that you can’t save much. My phone has 290 apps and my backup size is 3 GB.
Or you could pay 99 cents a month to upgrade to 50 GB iCloud storage.
I know my iPhone backup is generally about 1 GB (about 20 apps) but I have two apps that if I let them they will eat up the lion's share of space. One is VLC if I should get around to actually loading media onto the player (my ancient iTunes is too old to sync and the rest is a long story). It could easily change that 1 GB to 10 GB. The other app is one with offline maps that probably is using 400 MB of that 1 GB. Yeah, disabling backup for my weather app isn't going to accomplish much.
