If you have iTunes Match (or Apple Music) then typically you don't sync your library directly to the device, but use the cloud library. See Turn on Sync Library with Apple Music (or iTunes Match) - Apple Support. Sync Library may also appear as iCloud Music Library depending on what software versions are involved.
