To clarify, are you using macOS Catalina, or an earlier version?


If you're using macOS Catalina, this may help: Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer


If that doesn't clear things up, or if you're using an earlier macOS version, the suggestions in this link will be your next best step: If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod
