If I have already moved all my files to a new Macbook, do I still need to create a backup on the old Macbook before trading it in?

If you're sure you're not missing anything on your new Macbook (check twice) and you are going to trade in your old one: no.

The first step in this support article (backup your old Mac) is only to make sure you don't lose files you still need on a new Mac
