Payment verification with a gift card

Recently I have bought a 20 dollar apple gift card, I have redeemed it and the funds are in my account. When I try to purchase something an error message pops up prompting me to verify my payment method. The gift card balance is the only payment method I have and from what I can tell, there is no way to verify it. Please ask questions if your not fully sure of the situation.
