Phone Number changing

I have kept my old phone (iPhone 6S) and changed the sim however obtained a code to keep the old number however a new number is now in place do I need to deregulated iMessage or is that just when you switch to a new phone that isn’t an iPhone. If so how do I keep my old number? Thank you
