"The alias can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."

Hello!

To try and keep it simple:

  1. I had a bunch of files saved on my desktop of my personal computer (let's say Computer 1)
  2. I got a new job, and a new work-issued computer (let's say Computer 2)
  3. I connected my Apple ID on Computer 2, and all of my desktop files from Computer 1 became visible on Computer 2.
  4. I said, "Man now my desktop on Computer 2 is cluttered." So I put all of those files in a file named "personal files" on Computer 2.
  5. I lost my job and therefore had to relinquish Computer 2
  6. I came back to Computer 1. Since my all of my desktop files were connected through icloud, all of my work files are on Computer 1.
  7. I went to open my "personal files" folder on Computer 1, but when I try to open them, I receive this message, "The alias 'X' can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found."

What in the heck happened?

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying to re-direct the path to the original file source? If so, the problem is that the original files somehow disappeared... I can't find them anywhere. Which is weird that they could disappear from my first computer completely, if that was where they were originally saved.
