I changed MacBook at the beginning of the year and I have been saving my files onto icloud on a specific work folder (not in documents or desktop but directly onto iCloud>WorkName) as I used to do on my previous MacBook. The new MacBook has broken down today (I spilled tea all over it! Ouch!) and it won't power up. So I reverted to the old MacBook but when I look on iCloud>WorkName from the old MacBook the files I have created since having the new Macbook are not there but the old ones are (even the ones I thought I had deleted!). It's like the iCloud has gone back in time to the what it was before the new MacBook. How is that possible and more importantly how do I get my files back? Could they be hidden? Could it be that the new MacBook created them with sharing restrictions so I cannot see them unless on that device?

I hope someone can help.

PS I don't have back up as I thought my files would be safe on the cloud, the recently deleted folder is empty and what I can see on my iPhone is the same that I can see on iCloud.com and the old MacBook ... so no joy there either

Hi Ela72,

Thank you for clearing that up. Okay, have you tried logging into iCloud.com, and if you have, do the files and folder in question show up there? If not, I sadly suspect you are out of luck with recovering the files from iCloud and that on all three devices, you maynot have had it setup correctly to synch, as it has been over 10 months since the last new files were there.

Now, that said, you may be able to use the instructions below to attempt to see if you can recover any new files:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/guide/icloud/mmae56ea1ca5/icloud

Also, what applications you used to create the files you believe where being backed up? I ask as maybe you saved them instead to those applications synch provider?

Cheers,

Anthony

Use Spotlight Search:

  1. Hold down: [Command + Spacebar]
  2. Type: The name of a folder
  3. See what pops up

Chances are slim without a back up.

Hi,

Are you absolutely sure both MacBooks were logged into the exact same Apple ID? If they were, the wouldn't be sharing restrictions, as it would be analogous to you also having the iCloud setup on say, your iPhone with the same Apple ID.

Once you can confirm if you have the same Apple ID setup on both, or know the two Apple IDs being used, the community maybe able to assist you further.

Yes same Apple ID on both and on my phone but no new files for 10 months on my iCloud! It’s as if my iCloud files have gone back to the time before I bought the new Mac. I swear I have saved file to iCloud from my iPhone in the last 10 months but there is no sign of those either. The last saved file was one from the old MacBook…

Hi Thank you for this. There is nothing in the deleted files. I think you are right. I must have had some settings that prevented the files to sync. But it’s confusing when you are actually doing save as>iCloud>WorkName you think that’s where they would be saved not your laptop! Very frustrating! In answer to your other question they were mainly excel files.

Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.
