Display
I want to use a late 2013 21.5" iMac as an additional display with my 2019 27" iMac. Can this be done and what do I need (cables, adapters)?

You can connect any of these older iMac models to another Mac from 2019 or earlier for use as an external display. Learn how to identify your iMac model.
Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
I've seen at least one post that swore OSX above 10.13.6 worked fine, cannot confirm.
You'd have to erase the drive & conflicting reports if an older OS can be installed after Catalina install... maybe boot from an external drive?

That sounds like it will work except. Connect a Thunderbolt 2/3 Adapter to the 2019 iMac and connect a Thunderbolt 2 cable from the 2013 iMac to the adapter. I have Catalina on the old iMac. Is there some way to get High Sierra reinstalled?
Thanks. Both the late 2013 21.5 inch and the 2019 27 inch iMacs are running Catalina. Connected via the Thunderbolt 2 Cable and the Thunderbolt 2/3 adapter. Before logging in on the 21.5 inch I selected Command+F2. Now the 21.5 inch acts perfectly as another display. Thank you BD Aqua.
Thanks. Cable and adapter are on the way. I will post my results when I have an opportunity to make the connection.
The 21.5 inch iMacs do not support target display mode (TDM) from other Macs.
The 'except' in my post was referring to the OSX issue.
Great to hear, thanks for the report! :)
