An iCloud backup makes a compressed and encrypted copy of the data on your iPhone or iPad so if it ever needs to be restored, you won’t loose your data. It can also be used to set up a new device to be exactly as your old device was. Without a backup, if your device malfunctions, or get accidentally broken, you will lose the data on it.
