iPhone back up

Is it a good idea to use the external storage to back iPones up, in order to save the storage space of the PC? If so, how can I do it?

Its always a good idea to have redundant backups. Never a good idea to have only one. even an external one.

But yes, if you want to relocate the iPhone backups to an external drive it is possible, see the "Relocate iOS device backups" section here: Make a split library portable - Apple Community

The basic gist is you need to create a symbolic link from the folder iTunes uses, to the new location, since there is no way from within iTunes to change the location. Do note that if the external drive is not connected when making a backup iTunes will issue an error.
