iCloud Drive needs to finish updating before continuing with sign out

While working with iCloud Drive somehow, can't remember what, all of my many Desktop files disappeared. I was able to get them back on the Desktop again but all folders show the "down cloud" icon, while single files such as jpegs do not. When I open a folder and click on a file it downloads and the "down cloud" icon disappears for that file. After doing that for all files in that folder that icon disappears for that folder, so it must be that all those files are safely back on my iMac. However I still have many folders still showing the "down cloud" icon.

During this time, several days now, I'm getting the window with message stating "iCloud Drive needs to finish updating before continuing with sign out." and spinning gear. The progress bar is complete and the status is "Finishing" I have 3 options: 1. keep waiting 2. Cancel 3. Stop Updating and Continue. What happens with each of them? I'm running 10.12.6 Sierra on an iMac.

Good day Polly,

It sounds like you'd like to confirm the actions that will happen with each choice relating to iCloud drive updating. We'd be happy to explain, so you can make the best decision.

  1. You can wait for the iCloud Drive to finish downloading files, which can vary by time depending on amount of data to save.
  2. If you cancel, the iCloud feature will cancel the downloads it completed and revert to how it was before the process initiated. You'll remain signed in with iCloud Drive turned on. You can review and confirm this in System Preferences > [your picture].
  3. If you choose to stop updating and continue, the progress so far will remain, you'll stay signed in to iCloud Drive allowing you to continue any computer actions you'd like without the sync occurring in the background.

If you feel like it's stuck, let us know the size of GB being transferred along with how long you've been waiting for it to sync. Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive

We hope this helps explain.

Take care!
