why does purchasing icloud storage does not free up space on my phone

I purchased icloud storage to free up space on my iphone but there is still no free space available on my phone. I purchase storage so I can have photos and videos on icloud but my phone storage is still full. why isn't this space free on my phone now that I have purchase storage??? I have deleted so many apps just to keep my messages coming in. Someone help! I also do not have enough storage to do a software update. My icloud storage shows the new space availabe from the purchase but my general iphone storage still shows on as full with the photos taking up space. Can someone explain and help me.

you should understand that buying iCloud storage does not expand the capacity of your device.

are you using iOS 13? If so, you should update to 13.6.1 and see if that helps.

Otherwise..
