MacBook sign in starts the startup process but never gets passed the grey/white screen once the time bar is fully black.
Does anyone know why it won’t finish the startup process, or how to correct it?

Either a SW or HW problem, try this...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
