Virus screen warning on internet app

I received a warning while on internet that my phone was 47.5% compromised by at least 19 viruses. It directed me to go to the App Store and get some “VPN...” app to correct the problem. Can you explain? Is this legit?

No, it is not legit. All such pop up messages are scams. Close the offending page and avoid sites that are involved in such bogus advertising tactics.

Never download anything based on a popup message.
