iOS 14 Translate

I'm trying to learn German and I thought I could use the Translate app to help me improve my pronunciation. However, apparently my pronunciation is so wickedly awful that the Translate app doesn't even think it's German and tries to find some English equivalent and then translate that into German.

Example: I attempt to say "Der Handschuh" which Translate takes to mean the English words "Dirt Honshu" and then just gives up and repeats them in the German translation.

Is there anyway to to tell Translate that no matter how awful my pronunciation is, I really am trying to speak German?

Thanks.

As so often happens, *after* I posted that I scrolled down and found the button that let me turn "automatic detection" Off. I just wish Apple hadn't hidden it at the bottom of the list of languages.
