I’m considering buying my mother an Apple Watch, for the fall detection. Does your phone have to be near your watch in order to use the fall detection to get emergency services

If the watch is the GPS only version then you need to have your phone close by,if you have the cellular version of the watch then the phone can be away from the watch as the call will be made directly from the watch.
