iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

I will get my third iPhone in some weeks if there will be no solution i will leave the 12 series out.

very disappointed, waited 5 years with my old iPhone 6s, which have a beautiful white and no flickering. And when I look at the iPhone 12 Pro display, I’m getting sick of seeing the darkmode being greenish and white text looking yellow and getting headache by watching videos by night through the flickering :(

i thought Apple would do better but that’s only imagination and wishes.

If this should be the best iPhone they ever made 😂

Hello infomdulut,

I get this information following the analysis of the news and my experience with apple to be sure of what I am going forward, making the choice not to deliver the defective units any more was long to take because the defect is minor (some could think it), no more units available before Christmas, huge loss of money, identical dates for a return or a new delivery, not to mention that all the delivery dates have changed instantly in more than 1 month.

Coicidences, everyone is free to believe what he wants, coincidences are made to persuade and what is the use of persuading ...

I am from france too. I got replied from my Apple support today. He tried my best (took my order number etc) to request a replacement but apple France (sales) denied my request. THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE. That’s really not responsible at all!!! My first time is bring yo repair at my Genius Bar lille , and I show them the pic and video they said nope that not a proof. Then I offer to replicate the issue and voila they refuse to see also and send me back.

So now after the third follow up call with Apple support, he can only do is sending again my device to Apple repair center !!! (2 nd time) and he will try my best to replace there, but no warranty !!!

let’s pray ! I will continue with my right, since I could not make the refund anymore (I preorder and France was locked down during whole November), I only can bring to service my phone in first week of December.

Cool thanks for info on that tool. Mine is MG8P3 it says. But yeah as I posted elsewhere think all OLED suffer from this it's just that most don't notice it since only really noticeable in shadows or near total black which not as noticeable on IPS due to IPS glow near dark. Also remember all phone OLED have 2x as many green pixels so also more noticeable at lower light levels. Normally software used to turn down brightness on green pixels because of this but guess Apple needs to tweak or update algorithm they use to mask extra green like all other OLED phones do including every other iPhone OLED. That's why you're also hearing some iPhone 11 owners noticing green tint on their phones too since Apple must've made change in recent iOS update to change how OLED pixels work at low light levels.

Only other OLED phone I got is the LG V35 and it also has the green tint issue never noticed it before though till I got my iPhone 12 to compare. Seems Apple might be using LG OLED again in some of their iPhone 12 displays though don't know how to tell. Would explain the green tint issues since LG has had issues since back 2017 when my LG V35 came out!

This of course does not explain the quality issues with LG's pOLED displays, especially as LG does manage to produce excellent pOLED displays for Apple's Watch. It

https://www.oled-info.com/burn-vs-image-retention-and-lgs-new-p-oled-displays

Actually just took a pic of my iPhone 12 on tripod in this pic along with iPad with IPS display and iPhone SE 2020 also with IPS display below it all in front of my 43" PC IPS display.

They all show green the darker the squares get so seems like it might actually be normal. The thing with the IPS displays is that it's not as noticeable since the IPS glow mixes with the darker blocks as you can see in pic.

Also, if you screen looks to yellow probably got true tone or nightshift on since here's a pic of the iPad before I forgot to turn it off and you can see how colors shift to yellow!

https://postimg.cc/7fwpXR9S

Seems didn't win panel lottery all my displays got manufacturing defects :( Still doesn't explain why my IPS displays also show green tints in darker area since they don't use 2x the green pixels the OLED screen do?

Seems Apple not using same manufacter to make iPhone 12 displays or maybe very large batch of bad panels where stencils not lined up correctly on OLED display as excellently explained in this article:

If you ask why devices from Samsung or Apple or others do not have display tints, it’s probably because the manufacturing process used in those OLED panels are either different (there are other ways of manufacturing OLED displays too like Color Filtering or using Electron Beams) or the method being used is more precise which cancels out any human error.

https://techpp.com/2020/08/06/oneplus-nord-amoled-green-tint/

Anyways, as my pics show seems all panels have problem just more noticeable on OLED due to better contrast ratio. Guessing Apple will release an update to reduce output of green on OLED displays to make it less noticeable since that seems to be what Google, Samsung and Apple have done in the past since seems to be recurring issue!

Green tint: A familiar issue

And as far as screen flickering at lower brightness levels don't expect a fix anytime soon since that's apparently how OLED phones work. All OLED panels use Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control brightness. https://blog.elcomsoft.com/2018/10/iphone-xs-pwm-demystified-how-to-reduce-eyestrain-by-disabling-iphone-xs-and-xs-max-display-flicker/

Didn't know that might have to return my phone and stick with LCD display after all since flickering at low brightness is more annoying than green tint :( Seems you have to choose one or the other i.e. more uniform screen with better contrast OLED but with flickering or flicker free on LCD display but worse uniformity and contrast!

On 12 Pro Max using the public Beta 14.4 the problem persist, flickering on black moving screens, and backlight turning on and off on black stills. In short the same problem is present, unlike the previous commenter who said that much of the problem is reduced, I am not having that experience. Apple did acknowledge the problem today at the Apple Store and said that a solution is being found, when is unknown.

@TheJumitor, based on your case you have only 14 days only to return/refund your iphone (16 Novembre ) which I have the same situation like you. I am sending today the second time to Apple Repair center, as France Apple Sales Refuse to exchange or replace my screen 。。。(although the Apple support has contacted the Sales Departments to ask them to do so, but ....... nope), now he will try his best to exchange the phone at repair center but ... not 100% sure he can be done, but at least give it a try...

I’m sorry to hear so!

I was on the phone with apple customer care all the time. Initially they denied refund, as Apple India does not have refund policy. They said we’ll send 5th phone. I can’t tell how much i had to persuade them. Finally they agreed. Was it worth it? i guess so. I could have compromised with the blinking issue.

It took so much of my time. Every week, 3 or 4 days, i would spend an hour or more on phone. It’s all over now. There is this sense of relief but also of disappointment & disillusionment as how can a company sneak in such products.

overall, i’m willing to look ahead for now & will surely like to give next Gen Iphones a try, BUT after due scrutiny.

I hope your issue gets resolved via software update, stay safe my friend. Good Day!

Download 3uTools for windows

you will see all you need in verification report

for display maker you

G9N good samsung

G9P bad samsung

GVC good lg

GH bad LG

Personally I have G9N the greenish tint appears only below 30%

I do have flickering same as everyone else but sadly I can't refund or exchange as the issue is not big enough to be able to refund(no refund policy) or exchange(very hard to achieve) here where I live :(

i blindly trusted Apple and they failed me I am only hoping this can be fixed with an update :(
