macOS Catalina - appstoreagent process using excessive memory

Since the last Catalina update (10.15.7) I've had an issue were the appstoreagent process is exhausting the memory to the point were the system is unusable. The issue appears to be intermittent as sometimes the process will complete without using all the memory. At this point all I'm doing is starting Activity Monitor after booting and monitoring the storage usage, if appstoreagent is exhausting the memory I kill the process. Has anyone found a way to resolve this?

I've discovered the reason behind my RAM issue and perhaps this should be reported to the development team. I was downloading Xcode from the App store on the same day Big Sur was released. That was most likely a mistake as the download sat at the same progress indicator for 2 hours without moving. I interrupted the download and assumed the download was cancelled, it wasn't. After experiencing the RAM issue I hoped that trying the Xcode download again may resolve the issue. When I went into the App store Xcode still showed the timer icon, I clicked on the clock which immediately returned to the 'GET' status and resolved my issue.

Hi diparsons,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand there's a process of, "appstoreagent" that is using a high percentage of memory in Activity Monitor, which is impacting the performance on your Mac.

It's important to have optimal performance on your computer, and we'd like to help.

If you haven't tried yet, we suggest to restart your Mac in safe mode. This helps to perform a basic check of your startup disk, deletes some system caches and more. Here's an article with more information and the proper steps to take: How to use safe mode on your Mac Once you're in safe mode, please restart your Mac as normal and see if you continue to experience the same behavior.

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Kind regards.
