AirPods connect to my IPhone 12 while in the case

My AirPods have a mind of their own! I use them. Put back in case and they disconnect. But randomly they will reconnect without my knowledge while still in the case draining their batteries.

I have disconnected them manually. Tried “forget this device “. And also pushed button on the back of the case to reset.
