Thanks for all the suggestions. Although it wasn't anti-virus protection that caused the problem, it was an application with extensions that served the same function. Got rid of it and problem solved!

MalwareBytes for Mac:
This is software that searches for malware/adware (malicious software). Such software makes your Mac act in a suspicious manor. So, scan with it and then remove what is found. Once removed, uninstall MalwareBytes for Mac. Then restart the Mac.
It is created by longtime users of these forums. So, that is why it is the only trustworthy and reliable way to go about securing your Mac, when it comes through use of software

What are you presently doing that does not work?
It should be as simple as dragging the item onto the Dock Trash icon and releasing it. With a folder, you drag the file over the folder, wait for the folder to show a transparent surround, and then release the file.
That is precisely what I am doing and I had thought it would be simple too. What I see then is a screen that tells me it is moving the doc and a blue bar that goes back and forth and back and forth and never actually succeeds in moving anything.
Are you running any anti-virus software, as I am not, and what you describe is not occurring here with Finder when moving files.
Since you are on Big Sur: exactly where were/are those folders located? Are they in your User folder or the System folder? With Big Sur, the system is no longer accessible.
