Message on my imac: Mail cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn’t enough space in your home folder. Quit Mail and delete any files you don’t need. Then open Mail again.

FWIW, the error message is not suggesting you delete files from Mail, it is suggesting you delete files from the Home folder.
