Caller-ID is a carrier provided feature. Apple does NOT control carrier features, so Apple cannot give you what you want. You need to complain to your carrier if you're not happy with their caller-id options.

The option is there, but what Apple does not tell me is that they give providers permission to block it.

Meanwhile they suggest in their manual that I hide my Caller ID. I feel a little bit cheated.

I found another way to hide my Caller ID: I installed Skype on my iPhone. So in case I want to hide my ID I use a Skype call with the result that they only see a routing number that they cannot call back.

Thanks for taking the trouble to react on my question.

Let me try to simplify it. Carrier features on your phone are controlled by your carrier. They own the switches that are related to the services the carrier provides. Apple has no control over those switches, such as Visual Voicemail, Caller ID, network settings in Settings/Cellular (Settings/Mobile Data), Personal Hotspot, Wi-Fi Calling, etc. The carrier sends a Carrier Settings file to your phone when you first connect to their network that specifies how each network feature operates. One of those settings can be used to disable the Caller ID switch. And it’s probably because there is a government requirement that Caller ID alway be sent.

And in reality the switch doesn’t matter. It is not the phone that sends Caller ID, it is the network, and the network “knows” your number. Even if the switch turned on and off the carrier could ignore it. So to make this clear to you the switch is disabled.

Again, you simply don't understand.

IF your provider permitted it to be turned ON and OFF, it would do so. Your PROVIDER clearly doesn't permit that. So, instead of trying to argue with other users about something you just don't understand, take this up with your cellular provider. There can't be a difference of opinion, when opinion has nothing to do with reality.

Sorry maybe I was not quite clear: I can NOT turn it On or OFF. Status is ON and I cannot shift it to Off.

Since the same telephone did not have that problem in The Netherlands I can safely assume that my Thai provider takes away from me the possibility to hide my Caller ID.

Apple suggests in the manual that I can do that, but in the mean time they give the provider a (for me hidden) possibility to lock that function, and sorry: I still feel cheated.

Of course Apple is not responsible for provider functions, but this is really a Grey area.

You wrote: An option you can turn on or off from the iPhone for a feature DELIVERED by your cellular provider. And I completely agree with this believe me.

My only problem is that I can NOT turn it OFF.

I am also aware that I cannot blame Apple for provider functions; I have chosen the provider, NOT Apple.

So we all agree in many ways and further discussion regarding this issue is not necessary.

Our only difference is that I do not agree that Apple suggests that I have an option to hide my (Providers assembled) Caller ID. If you both do not mind, that is your right of course.
