My sons iPhone 11 WhatsApp doesn’t work when he leaves the house and the phone switches to data from WiFi. It just says “connecting” at the top and never changes. Any ideas please?

It sounds like WhatsApp on your sons iPhone 11 doesn’t work when connected to the cellular data network and we're happy to help!
If you haven't already done so, check to make sure that cellular data is turned on for WhatsApp: Use cellular data on your iPhone or iPad
If cellular data is turned on for WhatsApp, then follow the steps found in the Apple Support articles below.
If you see No Service or Searching on your iPhone or iPad
If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open
