there is a problem with this windows installer package.

If you are getting "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program

required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." when trying to install itunes on Windows 10, there is a problem with the Windows 10 installer for iTunes 12.10.11.

To fix the issue, go to the itunes download page at https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes and download version 12.1.3 at the bottom of the page (the one for older video cards). It installed beautifully and without complaint. I have a fairly new video card so I tried the old installer as a Hail Mary, and was pleasantly surprised to see it work. I worked several hours trying to get this to work until I found the solution. Unfortunately people that have hit this problem were unable to find a solution in other threads, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251368417.

I'm hoping this will save people a great deal of time in the future.

Windows, Windows 10

Hi Turingtest2,

Thanks for the additional info. Your suggestion to use troubleshooting was also mentioned in the thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251368417. Mumrules replied on May 17, 2020 indicating they had also tried the suggestions on that page with no success in fixing the problem, with a bit of realistic humor stating "Are there any other suggestions besides going out and buying a new pc?"

I have little use for apple devices due to these kinds of problems. Having said that, my apple devices are not new, but work as good as the day I bought them. As such, I have found 12.1.3 works for what I need it to do (Also I tested it and it does work with the iTunes store. I don't have a newer device so can't confirm or deny it will work with newer devices.)

The troubleshooting page has many suggestions that I would estimate would take a good day or two to go through them all. Instead of provided such a general solution, it would be nice if this forum could address the problem a bit more directly and narrow the solution down to more concrete answers with a couple options that directly address the error.

Hopefully that will help people quickly find a solution to this error quickly so they do not feel there is no solution "besides going out and buying a new pc":

The official download site for Windows 10 has three versions at https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes:

12.10.11 (2019) - confirmed not to work on Windows 10 when the given error is presented. (no solution found to fix)

12.4.3 (2016) - unconfirmed

12.1.3 (2015) - confirmed to work when the given error is present in 12.10.11. iOS versions supported unknown. Confirmed worked with iTunes store.

Your copy/paste hasn't preserved the links from the user tip. The information is there for those who seek it. Sadly I am unable to edit the tip without losing some of the formatting such as boxes that I've referred to, so it is what it is, but links to builds since October 2018 are now in comments at the bottom of the user tip.

Did you see/try this piece of advice?

....Alternatively try the Microsoft troubleshooter at Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

I cannot promise it will help as I don't recall working with your symptom often enough to get a solid fix for it. That said if the usual erase and reinstall approach doesn't work something else you can try is to install the various components of iTunes one at time as set out in the section Install missing components.

See this post Can't install iTunes 12.1 on Windows 7 64… - Apple Community for an old thread that has details for generating installation logs if you really want to try to get to the bottom of things. Again, I can't promise that it will lead to a certain fix, Windows installer problems can be really tricky.

A new computer isn't a solution that everyone can afford, but rejuvenating the one that you have is another approach. Back up all your data, try reinstalling over the current installation first if you wish, and if that doesn't move you forward then a clean install can be worth a shot. It can be easier if you have an alternative hard drive you can install on so that you can switch between the current system and new one until you're happy the new one has all you need.

I've copied and pasted the iTunes download links from the troubleshooting page (which is a fraction of the content on that page). Due to the 5000 character limit per post, this will be done in a couple posts.

Hi Turingtest2,

Thank you again for the additional information. There may be some confusion though. My original post was not a request for help. When I attempted to install iTunes, I hit the error message "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Searching the forums, I found threads on this error but no one posted a confirmed solution to fix it.

Through trial and error, I was able to find a solution that fixed it for me. My post was simply to provide the community with a solution for people to try. The solution may not work for everyone, but at least it may point them in the right direction.

No need to reply further. I do not want to overload the thread to the point it loses it's intended helpfulness.

there is a problem with this windows installer package.
