What is system and why does it take up so much storage?

I only have 16 GB on my iPhone and I don’t use up that much storage apps and photos wise, but all of my storage is taken up by system! What is system and is there a way to clear some things off it to give me more GB?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 14

System is, well, the operating system that lets your iPhone run. You cannot delete the system. Should be around 5 or 6GB for iOS 14.

If its using more than that it may be having an issue releasing the space.

Also 16GB is starting to be woefully inadequate to run iOS currently. IOS 15 will take around 7 or 8GB of space once its installed. So may not a good option for you with such limited space.
