SWIMMING WORKOUTS

If my watch only has GPS capabiltiy and not GPS plus Cellular, do I have to bring my phone near the pool or can I just sync my watch to my phone at a later time to view my workout?

I have 2 apple watches, Model 3 and model 6 (just purchased). I swim a lot and only want to use the apple 3 in the pool and exercise. Do I have to connect it to a phone to get the GPS for how far swim etc. I have just purchased model 6 watch. I also have a model 3 that I use all the time in the water (where I dont need the phone feature). Will the apple 3 watch still use the GPS function so that it will keep track of laps when swimming. Because of using so much in pool starting to have slight problems with it so that is why dont want to use the new one in the pool

You can sync the watch later when your phone is in bluetooth range of the phone.
