Apple Mail Archive issue - Move discarded messages into:

I know I can do CTR-CMD A and archive a message - but what does this preference do - when it says I can choose to archive - "swipe left" on a mac?

-- Move discarded messages into:

In Catalina it says to swipe left:

Q: How do we swipe left on a mac?

Choose whether to delete a message or move it to the Archive mailbox when you swipe left on a message in the message list.

This setting also determines whether you can delete or archive messages from Mail notifications.

Thank you for your reply, revDave,

Have used MacBook Pro with Mac OS Big Sur, in forming that last reply, hoping to demonstrate.

Took a little experimenting, to "get" the "knack".

Start by clicking on a message with the cursor arrow, to highlight it,

and then swipe directly with two fingers on the trackpad, to see left/right swipe options for that particular message.

Seems Catalina has that same swipe left / right Mail message option on your Mac, as stated in the article you linked to.

Unless you have the swipe option turned off ?

You might want try this:

Click on the Black Apple icon in the top menu bar,

Choose "System Preferences" from the menu that opens.

Choose "trackpad" from the Small window that opens.

Click on "More Gestures" and you see options for turning "swipe" on and off.

The animations there also give a better "swipe" demonstration, and you can tailor the swipe gestures to suit.

All the best :-)

Hi revDave,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Community, and for including complete info.

Don't use the function myself., but often seem to see it accidentally.

Seems if we use two fingers to swipe (don't click on it though) on any message notification in the left sidebar in Mail,

we can click to Delete / Archive, depending on that setting.

Swipe right and you can choose to mark it "unread / read"

Hope this helps :-)
