Do I have to use iCloud for storage? Can't I store all I want on my iMAC?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

An iMac would be Just Fine:

No. There is not need to use iCloud. As long as you have enough space, then storing it on your Mac should be just fine. I recommend keeping the storage space 40% free to avoid issues. Just know that if the file incompatible(i.e. because of particular software not being installed), the file will not open.
