I just got an iphone and I am trying to set it up, I got to a part where I have to do an update. Do I have to have a SIM Card in to be able to complete the update?

Sim card I have an iPad 6th generation I did a factory reset on it for a gift to my daughter and now when we turn it on it says must be updated before it will start up. I don’t have a SIM card and that’s what is required on iTunes to do an update. Do you have to have a SIM card to update the device? Also how would I get a SIM card without having to have service on it?

iPhone 8 64GB My current phone is a company phone and archaic. We use to get upgrades when warranted but since pandemic every man/woman for themselves....lol. That said, if I wanted to get an update I need to purchase an unlocked phone. I do not need a phone plane just want to take existing sim and add to new purchase. How do I make sure the phone I'm ordering online comes unlocked so I can have our IT add sim and get started? I don't want to purchase a phone and it arrives and it's not what I need. Trying to avoid any further delays. It's been a feat to say the least in getting a new phone. Went into the Apple store today and explained my situation and I was told for what I want to do I need to do online. So, here I am:) Any feedback is appreciated. Bradley x

No, but you will need one to activate the phone.
