Deleting Emails - Monterey

Apple Mail in Monterey 12.1

Where does an email go when I delete it using the trashcan icon or cmd/delete? It does not go in the trash folder, it just pops back up in the inbox. Tried using "erase deleted items" did nothing they just reloaded into my inbox.

• Restarted in Safe Mode and tried again with the same results.

• I had duplicate folders (inbox, sent, drafts, trash, etc.) under "Favorites". No clue why they were there. I thought this may be causing problems. So I used control/click to delete the duplicate folders. That worked on all but the "All mail" and "Trash" folders. They remain under Favorites.

So can anyone share a fix for this Mail ****?

Hi there Ebzoo,

We agree, this is unexpected behavior regarding your emails returning to the Inbox after deleting them, and we'd like to help. Let's start with some basics:

  1. When did this first start?
  2. You mentioned that the issue remained while in safe mode, but did you restart it normally afterwards to test?
  3. Does the same issue occur if you test in a new user? To test for this in a new user, check out the steps under 'Add a user' here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Cheers!

Thanks bruno!

So it started as soon as I started up my brand spanking new Mac. I was asked a million questions in Startup Wizard and I seem to remember adding my (then) active email and setting up Mail. That's probably where I messed up. Another person answering my question seems to think it is all because I am using Gmail.

Tested with safe mode on, then restarted and tested again.

I will test out your suggestion tomorrow.

Thanks!
