Apple Watch for kids

Hello, I would like to get my pre-teen an Apple Watch to keep track of their steps, monitor sleep and heart rate. Do they have to have their own iPhone to be able to use the watch or is it possible to connect them to my iPhone/watch as a family member? If this is possible, is there a certain series that would be compatible with this feature. They wouldn’t need access to the phone or texting features.
