Translate continually asks to download the language dictionary.

Translate, in text and not the app, continually asks to download the language dictionary I’ve used for a long time. I double checked the settings to make sure English (US) and German are downloaded, and they are. (Restarts, reloads, etc. done over time). Every time I try a translation I’m required to download the language. I do, then I get challenged again the next time.

Aha! On my iPhone, the On-Device Mode was off; on the iPad, it was on. And the iPad was where I have had the problem. I switched it off and that solved the problem. So, the bottom line is that the On-Device Mode requires the user to interact and press the “Download Language” button at each translation.

I thought both my devices were set the same. That’s why I was confused. Thank you.

Hello MacLivy,

Basedon what you’ve told us, it shoulds like you’re using Translate with Messages, is that correct? Translate text in apps and using the camera on iPad - Apple Support

If so, are you going to Settings > Translate > Downloaded Languages? If not, where are you going to check downloaded languages?

In Settings > Translate, do you have On-Device Mode enabled?

Cheers!

Thanks for the interest. Actually I use it to assist my translations with several German news apps and with German-language websites.

Yes, in Settings>Translate I have English/French/German downloaded but I have had On-Device translations off. I wanted better accuracy parenthetically. I will try with that setting enabled and get back.
