What can I do to resolve an Error 49244 problem with my external hard drive and Time machine?
Open Applications > Time Machine > turn off and remover that drive from the list.
Then try to erase and format the WD drive,
as per > https://www.hellotech.com/guide/for/how-to-format-a-hard-drive-for-mac
If you can not do that, then the drive is failing or has failed and needs to be replaced.
For a decent replacement Time Machine drive, do yourself a favor and get an external desktop drive

What version macOS? What hard drive is it?
Computer is:-
macOS Monterey 12.4
Hard Drive is Easystore WD
Have you tried reformatting?
No, I have not.
That would be my first step.
Thanks. I will give that a try.
👌🤞
Tried to reformat disk by using Disk Utility "erase" and got error message:- "could not mount disk 3s2 after erase".
What year iMac? Have you tried a different USB port?
Purchased Mac in 2018. I have tried other USB ports with no success.
I tried running Disk Utility 'First Aid" and then ran "Erase" again. Received error message "Erase process failed". Is my hard drive defective?
Yup, but try @den.thed’s steps above. For a no-fuss, solidly reliable, value-for-money drive, I recommend the Toshiba puppies https://storage.toshiba.com/consumer-hdd. Good luck!
