Altitude and compass
Why, when entering a destination there isn't an altitude or a compass?
Also, if I don't enter a destination, why isn't there a compass displayed?

Since you're posting in iPhone ...
Maps does not include an azimuth to - but it DOES give the altitude of - some destinations ... although not while navigating.
Compass is not not integrated with Maps but is does provide altitude.
If you feel that these two apps should be more tightly integrated, you can make that feedback to Apple here:
