How to check Apple Pencil battery

The Apple Support instructions on how to check the battery status on an Apple Pencil gen 1 are incorrect. Does anyone have a solution that works?

Ensure that your Pencil is paired/connected to your iPad:

Connect Apple Pencil with your iPad - Apple Support


To see your Pencil battery status, you will need to add the Battery Widget to either your Home Screen or Today View.


The Battery Widget can be installed in one of three views - selecting the view (or views) that are appropriate for your needs or preference:

Use widgets on your iPad - Apple Support


You can also monitor your Pencil battery directly from iPad Settings:

Settings > Apple Pencil
