"password required to enable apple watch to unlock this mac"

Before responding: This is a MacBook with latest version of Mac OS and a Watch 8 with the latest version of Watch OS. The watch is unlocked.

Why do I get this message "password required to enable apple watch to unlock this mac"? If I've told the OS that I want to unlock the MacBook with my watch, why does it require a password to 'enable Apple Watch to unlock this Mac'. This doesn't just happen on initial boot up. It happens throughout the day.

By setting up watch authentication I'm telling the Mac I _don't_ want to use a password; I want to use my watch to authenticate, not a password. What is the sense of setting a Mac to authenticate with the watch, if you have to enter a password? It makes no sense.

It should not happen throughout the day. Once upon initial boot, after that, no that's not normal unless you were to not use that Mac for a prolonged period of time (days) the number of which Apple does not discuss.

All I have to suggest is to make sure all their respective operating systems are up to date (Mac, Watch, iPhone) and otherwise make sure everything is in compliance with Unlock your Mac with Apple Watch - Apple Support. There are a great number of system requirements.

Also, if you do nothing at all for a little while (perhaps a day or two) you may find that the "unlock" feature spontaneously starts working again. I have experienced that on more than one occasion. I ignored it for a while, and it started working. I did nothing. Prior to doing nothing, I exhausted literally every option I could think of: restart everything, un-pair and re-pair the Watch, signed out of iCloud... etc. Nothing worked so I gave up.

Finally if all else fails please contact Apple using the Get Support link above. It is not supposed to do what you're experiencing.

It doesn't make sense. A user who somehow stole both your watch and your Macbook would still need to know the passcode to the watch. The watch can't be used to login to the MacBook unless the watch is unlocked. And you can't unlock the watch without a passcode.

The same thing applies "to passcode before FaceId". If someone steals your phone, they'd have to steal your face too to get in, right? I'm just asking Apple to please re-think both of these features. They are a pain for users and they are not increasing security.
