iCloud Photos

So i noticed how something had eaten up all my storage on my MacBook and checked it, and apparently it was all the photos from iCloud that had downloaded onto my mac hard drive. So i checked the forum for ways to delete these photos from my mac but keep them on iCloud and i found one supposed solution. I went to system preferences, clicked on my apple id and unchecked the photos from there. Thought it would solve it when my mac told me that it would delete 2000 something photos, but it suddenly stopped the deleting process for some reason and most of them are still there taking up most of my storage. I tried check the photos-thing and uncheck it again, but this time nothing happens.

Any way to solve this? :)
