2017 iMac crashing after Ventura upgrade.

I keep crashing. From looking at different reports, I have removed some app's that were listed on the etrecheck report. I was having this problem only once or twice a month, but since upgrading to Venture it happens several times an hour.

3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

24 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

macOS Ventura Version 13.0.1

I have 700 GB of 1.03 TB available. I do move a lot of music and pictures around sometimes because I have two 8 TB external drives and a couple of other smaller backup external drives and try to organize things sometimes.

At the moment this page will not allow me to Choose a topic so I don't know I will be able to submit this.

You may have a bad, loose or even incompatible RAM module.

What RAM module(s) did you add to get up to 24GB?

Mac’s are very sensitive to RAM upgrades and would test it with only the factory RAM modules installed.

Then if it works properly, I would upgrade it using OWC or Crucial RAM modules.

Same problem after Ventura upgrade, solved after recovery-erase (wipe) internal drive, clean installed Monterey 12.6, migrate from back up disk, ran maintenance and celan utilities, then upgraded back to Ventura 13.1. So far everything working as good as ever. Tried to post details of what I did, but my posts were removed: "We removed your post “2017 iMac crashing after Ventura upgrade.” because it discussed questionable advice or inappropriate activities." They're right, but it worked for me. Probably didn't need to do the round trip to Monterey and back, wiping internal drive and doing clean install of Ventura 13.1 may well do the trick. Good luck.

I did not realize that with Ventura, even with automatic updates setup, it did not get the last update. I did not have but one crash the last week, then I manually ran the last update. Since that time I have not had one problem. I'm not pointing the finger at Ventura, but for some reason the crashes stopped. I did find a couple of files from ccleaner but think I might have restored them since I had stopped using it some time ago. Or maybe I am just getting old and forgetful! The good news is, it seems to be fine now and I appreciate all the help. Thanks. Krlos, I hope you get it fixed soon. I don't have any idea why your post were removed but I found I could do that update manually by going to settings and General to do the update manually.

First, there is no need to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This documents describe what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community and Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support.

There are no known viruses, i.e. self propagating, for Macs.  There are, however, adware and malware which require the user to install although unwittingly most of the time thru sneaky links, etc.

Anti Virus developers try to group all types as viruses into their ad campaigns of fear.  They do a poor job of the detecting and isolating the adware and malware.  Since there are no viruses these apps use up a lot of system resources searching for what is non-existent and adversely affect system and app performance.

There is one app, Malwarebytes, which was developed by a long time contributor to these forums and a highly respected member of the computer security community, that is designed solely to seek out adware and known malware and remove it.  The free version is more than adequate for most users.

Also, unless you're using a true VPN tunnel, such as between you and your employer, school or bank's servers, they are useless from a privacy standpoint.

That being said uninstall ccleaner according to the developers instructions.

Thank You for your help. I did use ccleaner almost 4 years ago. I removed it a long time ago, or thought I did unless you saw something other than the dmg file or emails. I have searched my hard drive and find no installed ccleaner. Ram on this system was installed on purchase. I may have mentioned I began having some permission problems some time ago that were strange, not finding any help at the time I did install and run ccleaner. Since that time I re-installed the OS after removing programs listed on the etrecheck. So far this week I have not seen crashes for a while but have not used this computer much. I did have a strange problem and it was in the local Apple contractors shop for a couple of days. Then, was taken back due to the configuration of the hard drives. At present, I just pray it continues without problems. I do move a lot of files around often. Moving mostly music files to take to church or putting on memory sticks for use for special events. I do see the reports of high usage and have discovered the iMac handles large amounts of data better than windows. I have started dividing my batch into smaller amounts.
